Cannabis Consumption Methods

Whether you're coming to an NJ dispensary for medical or recreational reasons, it's important to understand the different ways that cannabis can be consumed.

Smoking Cannabis

Rolling Papers (Joints): Cannabis rolled up into a thin paper for smoking. Many people like to include a filter as well. Our favorite papers are RAW.

Blunts: Cannabis rolled up into a blunt wrap (which is typically the outer layer of a cheap cigar) with the insides discarded. Some popular blunt wraps are Backwoods, Swisher Sweets, and Dutch Masters.

Hand Pipes (Bowls): Hand pipes work by placing the cannabis in the bowl, lighting it, and inhaling the trapped smoke.

Water Pipes (Bongs/Bubblers): Water pipes come in many different shapes and sizes and are a bit more sophisticated because they all incorporate water to filter the cannabis smoke. The water cools down the smoke and filters out water soluble chemicals. However, the debate of whether water pipes are a healthier way to smoke cannabis still continues.

Vaporizing Cannabis

Vaporizing has become increasingly popular because it produces vapor instead of smoke. Vaporizers heat the cannabis high enough to release THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids without combustion. Many tout the great taste achieved when vaporizing high quality flower in a decent vaporizer. Some of the best, but also expensive, vaporizers on the market are made by Volcano.

You can also purchase handheld vaporizers. Make sure you read the reviews because some don't actually vaporize the cannabis, but instead end up combusting it. Some popular handheld vaporizers are made by Grenco Science and DaVinci.

Eating cannabis-infused food yields different effects than smoking or vaporizing cannabis. This is because the cannabinoids are processed by your liver instead of being absorbed through your lungs. Most edibles are made with some type of infused oil. A lot of people use the Magic Butter Machine to accomplish this process. The options are endless: gummies, brownies, cookies, etc...

An emerging trend is cannabis dinners consisting of multiple courses of cannabis-infused food and sometimes drinks too.

Tincture is made by using alcohol (typically Everclear) or vegetable glycerin to extract the cannabinoids from cannabis. The end result is a very concentrated form of cannabis where 1-2 ml drops can provide 10 mg or more of THC. Alcohol-based tincture is often added to a drink while glycerin-based tincture can be comfortably absorbed sublingually (under the tongue).

Choosing how you're going to consume cannabis is a very personal decision, and we hope that this brief guide has provided you with the information necessary to make a thoughtful decision. From time to time, it may be helpful to experiment with new methods of consumption. You never know what you might like!
