Key Terms

Cannabinoid: Compounds found in cannabis but also produced naturally by the human body. They interact with the body's endocannabinoid system to balance functions such as pain, stress, appetite, motivation, sleep, and more. The most commonly known are THC and CBD.

Terpene: Compounds found in cannabis and other plants that are sources of scent and flavor. Common profiles include citrus, woody, pine, skunky, spicy, fruity, and more.

THC: Tetrahydrocannabinol is the main active cannabinoid in cannabis and is primarily responsible for the "high" associated with consuming cannabis. Too much THC may trigger anxiety and paranoia.

CBD: Cannabidiol is a non-intoxicating cannabinoid found in cannabis. It is non-psychoactive, but may have other medicinal effects and has been found to modulate the effects of THC.

Kief: The accumulated trichomes, which are resin glands of cannabinoids and terpenes, that typically fall through a mesh screen in a grinder.

Hash: Essentially, concentrated kief that has been heated and pressurized into a wax or extracted into a liquid.

Zip: An entire ounce of cannabis (28 grams)

Half: A half ounce of cannabis (14 grams)

Quarter: A quart ounce of cannabis (7 grams)‍

Eighth: An eighth ounce of cannabis (3.5 grams)

Quap: A quarter pound of cannabis (4 ounces)

The Lingo

Alternate terms for cannabis: flower, bud, herb, reefer, mary jane, chronic.

Edibles: Food products infused with cannabis.

Joint: Dried cannabis flower rolled in a paper (normally hemp-based or rice-based)

Blunt: Dried cannabis flower rolled in the wrapper of a cigar. Some brands, like Juicy J, make hemp-based blunt wraps that are tobacco-free.

Spliff: A joint with some dried tobacco mixed in with the cannabis.

Bong: A typically large water pipe that filters smoke through water when you inhale.

Bubbler: A typically small water pipe that filters smoke through water when you inhale.

Dab: Concentrated doses of cannabis made by extracting THC and other cannabinoids with a solvent like butane or carbon dioxide.

Dank: Really potent, sticky, top shelf cannabis

Backwoods (blunt): A type of cigar that is used to roll large blunts.

Game (blunt): A type of cigar that is used to roll large blunts.

Dutchmaster (blunt): A type of cigar that is used to roll large blunts.

Swisher (blunt): A type of cigar that is used to roll small blunts.
